Pilates
A Form of Exercise worth considering
“Never injured a day in my life. In
ten sessions you’ll feel the difference.
In twenty sessions you’ll see the difference
and in thirty, you’ll have a new body."
Joseph Hubertus Pilates

Pilates
(pronounced puh-LAH-teez) is a form of body conditioning
that was developed in the 1920s by legendary physical
trainer Joseph H. Pilates. Pilates is an exercise
system which focuses on improving flexibility
and strength for the total body without building
bulk. This method of exercise and physical movement
is designed to stretch, strengthen and balance
the body. With regular practice of specific exercises,
together with focused breathing patterns, Pilates
has proven itself invaluable (not only as fitness,
but also as an important support to professional
sports training & physical rehabilitation
of all kinds).
Some Benefits of Pilates:
- greater strength & muscle tone
- more efficient respiratory, circulatory &
lymphatic systems
- better posture
- increased joint mobility
- flatter stomach & trimmer waist
- improved flexibility
- less incidence of back pain
- lower stress levels

Insect
Bites
Natural Remedies for
Relief
Some insect bites can be serious, while others
can simply produce uncomfortable itching &
redness. During the summer, there are a few things
you can do if you happen to get an insect bite.
|
- Wash area with soap & water. A paste made
up of baking soda & water can be applied.
*Use ice if swelling occurs.
- Quercetin is a bioflavonoid that can help
reduce allergic reactions.
- Citronella candles or bracelets can be effective
for repelling mosquitoes.
- Tea tree oil/extract is a natural insecticide
and will help repel them.
- Calendula ointment is effective for repelling
insects and stopping irritation after a bite.
- Calamine lotion can be useful for relieving
itchiness.
- Mosquitoes seem to be repelled by B Vitamins,
which are secreted through the skin. Eat more
brown rice, wheat germ, blackstrap molasses
or brewer’s yeast before heading outdoors.
- Remember that perfume, hair spray, etc. attract
insects.

Citrus
Fruit
Fresh, Juicy, and oh so Good
All citrus fruit is acid fruit. It is very detoxifying.
Some people may have problems with this type of
fruit because of their acid content. The acid,
however, is a healthy nutritional substance. For
instance, ascorbic acid is vitamin C (found especially
in many fruit & vegetables).
Examples of citrus fruit include lemons; oranges;
limes; grapefruit; kumquat and tangerine.

While a fruit salad only takes about 30 minutes
to digest, a steak by contrast can take 8-10 hours
to digest! Your body quickly assimilates the nutritious
elements of the citrus fruit, and so is able to
use its energy for purposes other than digesting,
like healing, etc.
- Citrus fruit contains a high water content,
so it hydrates and rejuvenates the body.
- Citrus fruit is loaded with vitamins, needed
every day.
- Citrus fruit is high in fiber, promoting regularity.

How
to Order Food in a Restaurant
And Keep it Healthy
Most restaurants are happy to adjust or ‘tweak’
their menu to accommodate those who wish to eat
a healthier diet. |
- Review your choices carefully.
- Salads are always the best choice (living
food, full of nutrients). After choosing a salad,
ask for a simple olive oil & vinegar dressing
on the side. This way, you dip each forkful
into the dressing, thereby controlling the amount
of dressing used - and using less overall. When
salad dressing is already put on the salad for
you, it’s usually far too much.
- Choose your ‘sides’ well. Steamed
vegetables or brown rice are good substitutes
for mashed potatoes or french fries.
- Avoid sauces. Enjoy some fresh herbs instead
- or a twist of lemon. If you must choose a
sauce, tomato sauce is the best choice.
- When ordering a veggie burger, for example,
ask for no bun or a whole grain bun, if they
offer it. Have the cheese left off, too. Garnish
with fresh vegetables such as onions, lettuce
or tomatoes, instead of mayo or ‘special
sauce’. Have a salad as your side.
- Pass on the bread starters. Wait for your
meal, rather than nibbling on the bread &
butter that is brought out before you eat.
- Choose to drink water or herbal tea instead
of sugary juices, alcoholic drinks or caffeinated
coffee.
- Pass on dessert, or choose a fruit plate.
- Choose healthier additions to the meal. For
example, instead of sour cream, choose fresh-cut
salsa to enhance your meal.

Growing
healthy tomatoes isn't rocket science. You
just need to follow some common sense prevention
tactics to prevent diseases.
Solarize your soil
Solarize your soil to control nematodes.
It's also an effective treatment for other
pests and disease pathogens. Moisten the
area and cover it with a clear plastic tarp.
To be effective, it must remain in place
for at least three to four weeks during
the hottest part of the summer.
Plant marigolds
There are plenty of half-understood stories
about marigolds. The myth is that planting
marigolds around your garden will keep away
pests. The truth is that spider mites love
marigolds, and so do many rabbits, so putting
in a few flowers might attract more pests
than you had before. The other part of the
truth is that marigolds can be used to treat
soil with nematode problems, if you do it
properly. You'll want to select a French
variety such as 'Nema-gone', 'Golden Guardian',
or 'Tangerine'. Plant the entire affected
area thickly in the marigolds, grow them
for at least three months, and then till
them into the soil.
Rotate Your Crops
Put your tomatoes on a three year rotation
schedule. This will give you a chance to
solarize your soil and break the disease
cycle. Make sure that you don't plant your
tomatoes in a place that other members of
the tomato family (eggplants and peppers)
have grown in the past three years.
Dispose of Diseased Plants
Don't compost plants with diseases because
you risk spreading the disease to the rest
of your garden. Throw away or burn diseased
plants and any garden debris (mulch, weeds,
etc) that came in contact with them.
Symptoms that are not diseases
(Or Really Problems, For That Matter)
Green shoulders. Some
tomatoes are like mutts: nothing to look
at, but great to have. Some unimproved old-time
varieties end up with "green shoulders."
That's just the way they grow, and there's
not much you can do about it.
Cracking. Many cherry
tomatoes crack after heavy rains (or even
if you look at them sideways), and there's
not much you can do about that, either.
Just remember to pick all the ripe ones
before it rains. Some kinds of big tomatoes
are prone to cracking, too. These cracks
typically scar over and do not affect taste.
Keep notes on which ones do well for you,
and ask yourself, "Do I want perfect
red balls that were bred to bounce well
in shipping, or do I want real tomato flavor?"
